GIS

Geography plays a role in many decisions we make within our daily lives. Whether it is driving to your local grocery store or emergency personnel responding to an emergency, geography is involved. This is where Geographic Information Systems (GIS) comes into play. Everyone has used a GIS in some way at one point in their lives either by using a GPS device in your car or by printing off driving directions online. However, the complete GIS system is more than just simply printing a map. A GIS system captures, stores, analyzes, manages and presents data which is spatially referenced. It is a dataset of complex information gathered together in one location which allows for detailed analysis of a particular geographic location.

The City of Goodlettsville’s GIS department creates and maintains this database infrastructure. From Public Works to Planning, almost every department utilizes GIS in some way, maintaining sanitary sewer data, parcel data, street, water, electric, and drainage; the list goes on and on. Through careful analysis, managers and city officials use this data to make decisions to help the most important people of all, our citizens.
